Hi there, My name is Katie Morton & im 21 years old and live in Mount Vernon which is in the east end of Glasgow. I am quite enjoying the subject of Scotland the Media and National identity as it is good to hear what other peoples opinions are about what it means to them to be scottish and how they feel about the sterotypes and myths that seem to have been created within films about scotland over the years.
I would probably say im quite proud to be Scottish actually, and possibly more to say that i am from Glasgow. I have been brought up here all my life and i really like the culture that we live in but mainly the humour and banter that us Glasweigens have, I mean the chat and funny everyday situations i find myself in i just laugh and think that would only happen in Glasgow!. I have also been around the Scottish comedy industry my whole life just really because of the assosiations my family has with scottish media and television etc and i feel i have quite a good understanding of it so when my presentation was on this subject i enjoyed doing the research.
To be honest, I had never really watched "Scotch & Wry" but i honestly think it is hilarious!! The sketches for me just total represent then dry Scottish humour. I would say my favourite sketches are the one with the policeman -//http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gw2czXCAeFU&feature=related//. My main area of interest in this area i think is why do people find scottish comedy funny? why is it so popular. Here are just a few ideas that i feel could be some of the reasons why:
}The main reasons would be that Scottish people are not afraid to take the piss out of themselves its part of the Scottish banter that even still exists today.
}Scottish comedy is relatable to the viewers. As they are set in well known areas in Scotland, people have either been there or have been raised in similar areas.
}Characters such as Rab C – is your typical drunk man but before this would have been the usual Scottish male, drunk & stupid knowing nothing other than his close by surroundings.
}Rab c despite being full of the drink most of the time – is philosophical about life and knows more than just the area he lives in.
}It is also because people can relate to the Character of Rab – everyone most probably knows someone who is very similar to Rab whether it be there dad, uncle, or neighbour. It is now a almost a joke & way of life that has creeped in to Scottish culture – when you see some drunk man wittering away to himself your 1st thought will probably be that of Rab C. Or how many times have you seen an angry wife dragging him out of the pub on a Friday night!!
