There have been many films made about Scottish history, which allow modern society to appreciate Scotland and where she came from.
Braveheart

Braveheart is the story of William Wallace, a courageous Scot who fought for Scotland’s Independence and freedom against King Edward ‘Longshanks’ I of England forceful regime. The film shows his most famous and successful battle; the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297. Wallace ultimately pays the ultimate price for his heroic actions against a formidable King when he is hung drawn and quartered. The film is filled with Tartanry discourse, Braveheart is both historical and mythological, but it is a story of a hero who will make you proud to be Scottish.
Rob Roy

Rob Roy is based on the novel by Sir Walter Scott, it is the tale of Robert Roy McGregor a cattle owner and head of a honourable highland clan. McGregor borrow money (£1000) from the royal Marquis of Montrose in order to make a profit on some live stock which will in turn help his people through the winter. McGregor is then deceived by one of Marquis Men, Archibald Cunningham who steals the money from McGregor’s friend MacDonald and kills him at the same time. McGregor cannot afford to pay the loan back and is unwillingly to give up his land he becomes a fugitive hunted by Cunningham. Rob Roy combines the two Scottidh discourses Kailyard and Tartanry. This tale of bravery, honour and fighting for what’s right, against disloyal and shameful characters.
Mary Queen of Scots

Following the death of her husband Francis II of France Mary I returned to Scotland. Mary soon learns that the protestant religion is taking over in Scotland as it has done in England with the rule of her cousin Queen Elizabeth I. Elizabeth fears that Mary may be there to cause trouble for her so she sends her trustful friend Robert Dudley to seduce Mary and marry her. Elizabeth also sends s Lord Darnley a influential Catholic whom Mary marries instead as Elizabeth had predicted.
Following this is a story filled with romance, love, deception, power, murder, pregnancy and an execution. Mary Queen of Scots is a tale not to be missed.
Brigadoon

Brigadoon is the story of a small rural Scottish village which appears for only one day every hundred years, although to villagers it seems no longer than one night. The spell placed upon the village is view as a blessing as it saved them from destruction. However if any member of the population leaves Brigadoon then the spell will be broken and Brigadoon and its inhabitants will be nothing but dust. The film see’s two American tourist stumble across the village when out hunting , one of whom is Tony who immediately falls in love with the lovely Fiona. Tony is told that if his love for Fiona is true he may stay in Brigadoon. He initially says yes but changes his mind and heads back to New York. Whilst in the big apple he cannot get Fiona out of his mind, he decides to leave New York behind and head back to Scotland. It is because of his great love for Fiona that Brigadoon appears before the 100years have passed. Tony and Fiona have a lovely reunion and life begins for the two in Brigadoon. This film again uses both Scottish discourses to the maximum- Kailyard and Tartanry.
MacBeth

MacBeth is based on the works of William Shakespeare about a Scottish Lord who murders the king with encouragement from his wife and acquires the throne himself. MacBeth is not a tale of a noble man but how greed, the lust for power and guilt of one’s actions can turn one’s life upside down.
