What is Scotland?

This subject was one of the first topics discussed in the module, looking back into Scotland's history and how it got to where it is today, how it identifies itself from other countries in the world, especially how it differentiates itself from England!

Portraying Scottish National Identity on Film is a difficult thing. It depends on your view on what National Identity is. Different theories of identity and culture exist. Some commentators have used different discourses to simplify the way that they believe Scotland has been portrayed on film in the past, and is portrayed at present.
However, the media consists of more than simply film. We also have to consider the Scottish Press, and even Scottish music and literature. And of course there is Scottish TV Drama. Different forms of Scottish television are important such as the crime series - epitomised by Taggart, and Scottish TV comedy such as Rab C Nessbit and the Limmy Show. We should also consider Radio if we want to make sure nothing is missed out. Some might argue that we should look at Scottish internet sites.

Scotland in film/Film in Scotland.

Scottish National Identity can be represented through discourses in film and television. The operation of discourses can clearly be seen in some of the most famous Hollywood depictions of Scotland, such as Braveheart and Brigadoon. In fact it is possible to argue that the way people see the story of the country is linked to its screen history and the discourses these represent.
